Belly Dance

History is not clear about the origins of Belly Dance. Since written is more concerned with invasions, battles and rulers.  However we know that  Belly Dance spread though out most of the area that is now Spain, and the Middle East the 8th to 12th centuries due to a series of invasions, settlements and exiles.   Various tribes each had their own distinct styles and incorporated elements of the countries and tribes, that they invaded, were invaded and had associations with.   Belly Dance was influenced by religious rites,  feasts of harvest, celebrations,  self-entertainment within the encampments and more.  In the late 40’s and 50’s, in Egypt, Badia Masabny  incorporated strong elements of ballet and modern dance, and brought belly dance to a large stage using dancers, who became some of the top stars of early movies in Egypt, thus changing the face of belly dance throughout the world.

Today, in the Middle East the are innumerable tribes, countries and sects and many lay claim to their own dances.   Belly dance has become a huge phenomenon from Germany, Japan, Austraila to the United States.  There are many styles.  Flamboyant Flamenco fuseion, energetic Turkish, Egyptian with its strong internalized movements, American Tribal which can be a fusion of Yoga, Gypsy, Middle Eastern, Hip Hop and Goth, and country style that draws from the traditions of the native folks of the countryside.

I took several classes at the Belly Dance Shoppe a few years back with a freind of mine and we enjoyed them very much. I never got to use most of my last 8 class card due to some family issues that came up :( but, I would like to highly recommend taking belly dancing classes here! It’s so much fun, you learn a little history, the dancing itself is an active meditation and you smile alot! I’m thinking of taking more hopefully this fall :)

    Have fun!!!
