Bring a sword or take a shopping trip to your closest Goodwill store and purchase a tray for balancing. You will need to purchase a tray that is not heavy at least 16 inches round. A candle plate or a charger is a good selection. If you would like to select what you would like to display on your tray please bring to class! Adayna suggests Goodwill so that you would be frugal in your purchase of first balance project. Please try the tray on your head in the store just to see if it feels like it is the right size and weight. Do not buy a heavy tray, headaches during performance is not pleasant.

Drills & Technique (All Levels Appropriate) – 2hrs – Exciting drills in the Jim Boz style which increase precision, not for dry expression of hip subjugation, but to allow the body to move in a variety of cultural expressions. All techniques taught in this workshop will build into more complex combinations later in the weekend. Suitable for all levels, we will focus on muscle control for a subset of movement vocabularies appropriate to Arabic and related dance forms that will be used for the entire workshop series.

Saturday PM 1:30 to 3:30 PM $40

Intermediate Technique & Combinations (Levels 2-Above Recommended) – 2hrs With a solid foundation in the concepts expressed in the morning workshop, we will construct more complex combinations and higher level techniques adding further layers and opportunities for individual expression. Phrasing and melodic content will add a deeper layer to the basic combinations. Variations & modulations of movement vocabularies will be introduced.

Sunday AM 10:30 to 12:30 PM $40

Expressing Egyptian Dance: Modulations & Musical Phrasing (Levels 3-Above Recommended) – 2hrsBased on the philosophy that Arabic dance is much more than just a sequence of movements, we will take our combinations further to touch and express the soul of the movements. We will refine the same combinations with additional advanced techniques, subtle modulations, to add variety and excitement.

Sunday PM 1:30 to 3:30 PM $40

Advanced Techniques/Combinations/Expressions (Levels 4-Above Recommended) – 2hrs Bringing all of the information from the previous 3 workshops together, we will take our concepts to the highest level: Performance, whether for individual enjoyment, professional performance, choreography or improvisation. Comments on Jim Boz

Drum Solo by Jim Boz

One of my favorite instructors will be here Jan 23 and 24.  His sense of humor relaxes me and he has so many funny little ways to help me get a move and memorize it that I get a lot of out of his workshops.  He helps me feel and understand the music .  I am especially looking forward to the improvisation and spot techniques portion of his workshop. …  That is one of the things I always get f rom him but this time it is actually  a part of his workshop. I think that every dancer even a beginner will love that about these workshop.  Hope you can join me.

A Gala show has been added for January 23.   Dancers taking the workshop will be given first priorty.  Sign up for a class and let Helena Vlahos know that you want to dance in the Show.  More details about the Jim and the classes are above.

I am getting so excited!  Hope that you can join us

A Man? Belly Dance?

Jim Boz, The Man

Jim Boz, The Man

Several years ago, while in Austin, Texas, taking a workshop, I noticed an unusually large male student at the back of the class.  Others in the class seemed to know him.  I quickly dismissed him as a local beginner student. That evening while waiting to perform. I was fortunate to meet him.  I found that his name was Jim Boz.  He was the most delightful man, concerned that my students and I hadn’t had dinner and if our accommodations were satisfactory.  I was surprised that he was no beginner, he was actually performing. However, since he danced right after our group, I missed his performance. Next morning, Yasmina Ramzy, was discussing refinement of hand and arm moves in classical Raks Sharki, then said. “Like Jim Boz in his performance last night”.  I was definitely taken aback as I turned and looked at this larger than life man.     That evening, I was able to watch the entire show and found out how wrong my assumptions were. Jim Boz chose an exciting classical piece.  He was exciting, refined, and articulate! His walks and spins were masculine. His muscular contractions produced rippling body waves and fantastic accents that would be the envy of any Raks Sharki dancer, male or female. In the years since, I have come to know Jim as a teacher.  Jim is just as good at teaching.    He helps the dancer discover the place within her body that the move comes from, how to give the move different looks and textures. Because of his uses experience and observations that we have all experienced, the students leave the workshop with a better understanding and retain more of what they have learned.   Fans of Jim know that Jim’s his wit and sense of humor make his classes fun and memorable. Experience a weekend of classes with Jim in Phoenix. January 23 and 24 at DanceDanceAz studio.  You can sign up on line at http://www.gobellydance.com/JimBozWorkshop.html or call 602 997 4149
